Resources for You

Since beginning Liturgies for a Life Abroad, I have had the privilege of writing several books and creating tools to help you journey well in your life abroad. I look forward to adding more resources to this site in the future!

The person who has experienced life abroad often finds themselves feeling a bit "tongue-tied" as they try to find words to express the unique experiences they've had. There is much to celebrate about the cross-cultural life, and also much to grieve. When we don't have the words or tools to express these things, we end up with unprocessed emotions that can make us feel even more like an outsider.

Using liturgies to process and pray through cross-cultural experiences can be a powerful tool for the expat. Many fellow wanderers have found liturgies to be a welcome companion to their journey abroad. Not only are liturgies written by others helpful, but learning to craft your own is a beautiful and introspective practice that invites the Holy Spirit to search our hearts and draw out those experiences and emotions that need to be brought before the Father.

As we travel to the farthest corners of the earth, there is nowhere we can go that God’s presence doesn’t go with us. The words on these pages are meant to be a companion on that journey— keeping our hearts ever moving toward the One who orders our steps. Written for those who have made their homes on foreign soil, Liturgies and Laments for the Sojourner: Volume One is a collection of prayers that creates moments of worship out of the not-so-ordinary moments of expat life.

With liturgies for packing, culture shock, visas and immigration, language learning, homesickness, and other cross-cultural experiences, those living abroad will be reminded that they aren’t alone in their struggles and that they can find God’s presence in the midst of them. Unlike us, God is not bound by borders, time zones, languages, or visa stamps. We trust that He will meet you in these pages, wherever you are in the world.

This volume of prayers is written for the families living in the a whirlwind of transition.

It's for the teams that hit the ground running and long for support on the hard days.

It's for the parents raising children on distant shores.

It's for friends who become your family in a foreign place.

It's for those who grew up as sojourners and have now chosen to grow roots as adults.

It's for those back home who long to send their sojourners well.

Written for those who have made their homes on foreign soil, Liturgies and Laments for the Sojourner: Volume Two is a collection of prayers that creates moments of worship out of the every day realities of expat life. It includes liturgies for singles, empty nesters, TCKs, schooling abroad, loss, relationships, and conflict. Unlike us, God is not bound by borders, time zones, languages, or visa stamps. We trust that He will meet you in these pages, wherever you are in the world.

Crafting Liturgies Online Workshop

Heather has had the privilege of leading multiple online workshops for groups of sojourners who want to learn how to craft their own liturgies for life abroad. If you're interested in booking Heather for an online workshop or other speaking engagement, you can reach out via email. Here are a few testimonials from those who have attended her workshops:

"Heather led the Aging Parents Cohort at Global Trellis through a clear, step-by-step liturgy process. You do not need to be a writer—her pastoral warmth and practical prompts turn real-life experiences into prayed-through words. She gave us both space and structure, helping us name what’s hard and what’s holy, and we left with liturgies we’ll actually use. It was an honor to have her lead us." - Amy Young, Global Trellis

"To be honest, I was not sure I would connect to this. About halfway through your workshop I was tearing up as my mind began to wander to the liturgies I now want to craft. Wow. Thank you for kindly laying out the gifts liturgy can hold for our walks with Christ.”- global worker and workshop attendee

Reach out, I'd love to hear your story!
