A New Book of Prayers for the Sojourner

In March of 2023, I co-authored a book of prayers covering broad topics that most expats deal with:

packing

visas and immigration

language learning

comparison

culture fatigue

unpacking

and more

When Alicia, Tamika, and I released Liturgies and Laments for the Sojourner: Volume One, we already had a list of prayers that we couldn't fit into that volume but felt were needed. Most of them revolved around the topics of relationships, family, and TCKs--some of the heaviest and most complex things we deal with in life abroad. So we went to work on a second volume of prayers that would give voice to these challenges and experiences.

We intended to release Volume Two in the summer of 2024--the writing was mostly complete and we had assembled a launch team to help give feedback and share the book once it was published. Unbeknownst to us, the second half of 2024 and first half of 2025 would hold some unexpected and all-consuming personal and family challenges for all three of us. Major transitions, family crises, medical challenges, team dynamics, and many other big and small things kept us from having the margin to do the remaining editing and formatting work.

This is the reality of not being a career writer, but one who writes, edits, and publishes words in the ever-changing margins of our actual careers and lives. While I dream of one day having endless hours to sit and write with someone paying me to do so, any writing you see from me and my co-authors is a sacrificial labor of love for the community of sojourners worldwide with whom we identify and want to see journey on in worshipful communion with Jesus.

So in November, we determined to finish this book. We cleared space in our very-full days to complete the final details of this project so we could publish it before the end of the year. What a blessing to have it finally released and ready for you and your loved ones! Some of the topics you'll find prayers for in Volume Two are:

expat relationships

TCKs

serving single

loneliness

long distance friendships

team dynamics

educating TCKs

death and loss

those who send us

goodbyes

and more

It is my sincere hope that you will feel seen, understood, and held in the pages of this book. This cross-cultural life can be so isolating, but perhaps you'll feel a little less alone as you pray these prayers and know that others are praying them, too. And we hope you love it enough to gift it to friends and fellow sojourners as well! May the Lord's presence meet you in the pages of this book, and may you find His grace sufficient for the season of journeying you find yourself in today.
