At Home in the In-Between

I gaze out the oval window

feeling the full weight of my

smallness

drifting

untethered

high above the places

I love

my heart split wide open

trying to hold

each place

across the miles

Suspended in the air

I wait to descend

yet knowing that

landing

means I left

and it doesn’t matter

how many times

I leave

or where I’m going

I’m not just leaving

a place

but a part of myself

that only exists there

Wrapped in fragile

flesh and bone

I am limited

unable to be in

more than one place

at one time

though my heart and mind

travel daily to

the distant lands

I love

I can only be

where my feet are planted

So, let me be here

now

in-between

not there anymore

not yet where I’m going

my body

limited by time and space

but my heart

expanding

holding every place

I’ve left

every place

I go

weary from the goodbyes

yet overflowing from the gift

of this global life

I gaze out the oval window

wondering when I’ll be home

wondering where home is

anymore

knowing deep within

home is not a place

but a Person

and no matter where I wander

He is with me

and I am home
