Hi, I'm Heather, the creator and writer behind Liturgies for a Life Abroad. I've lived overseas with my family doing non-profit work in SE Asia since 2015. In 2021, I started writing and sharing liturgies and words about cross-cultural life on Instagram. That little corner of social media has become a place for sojourners from every corner of the globe to find solidarity, hope, and words of prayer for when they don't have their own.

This book is for the senders, but it’s for the goers, too. As the ones sent out, it’s imperative that we know how much our going impacts the ones who send us so we can cultivate greater empathy, compassion, and appreciation for them.

If you are the one being sent, I encourage you to read this book with an open and tender heart and ask the Spirit to show you how to be more mindful and supportive of those who send you.

Many organizations do a wonderful job of supporting those they are sending to the nations. But are they supporting the supporters? Are they equipping those who go with resources and tools to put in the hands of their loved ones who send them? Good member care should include caring for the ones who make the sacrifice to send.

Let’s normalize and prioritize supporting the senders. Send this post to a leader in your org and encourage them to make “For Those Who Send” an available resource to their workers and the ones who send them.

Just because they are adults doesn’t mean it isn’t hard to have parents serving far away. Children who send their mothers and fathers to the nations make a special kind of sacrifice, one that deserves to be acknowledged and appreciated.
